What Is ISO/IEC 42001?
ISO/IEC 42001 is the international standard for managing AI in an organization. It sets out how an organization gives people clear roles for AI and assesses the risks and impacts of each AI system. The organization then checks and improves how it uses AI over time. This way of working is called an AI management system, or AIMS. It applies to organizations that build AI, offer AI-based products or services, or use AI in their work.
From Putting It in Place to Checking It Works
Foundation introduces the essentials. Lead Implementer focuses on establishing and maintaining an AI management system. Lead Auditor focuses on checking evidence, identifying gaps and reporting findings.
Why Is AI Management Important?
AI now supports decisions in hiring, lending, customer service, healthcare and many other areas. When an organization manages AI with clear policies, named owners and regular checks, it gains the benefits of AI while controlling risks such as unfair results, loss of privacy and wrong answers. Customers, partners and regulators increasingly expect this kind of management.
What Does ISO/IEC 42001 Cover?
- Requirements in clauses 4 to 10: context of the organization, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement. This is the same high-level structure as ISO/IEC 27001.
- Annex A, a list of reference controls in areas such as AI policies, internal organization, resources for AI systems, assessing the impacts of AI systems, the AI system life cycle, data for AI systems, information for interested parties, use of AI systems, and third-party and customer relationships.
